A Wordplay & Flow review by Tannika Taylor

One thing I admire about the arts is how creatives can push the boundaries when it comes to fusing multiple art forms together to produce unique outcomes. Beneath the Cracks by Liam Spencer is a wonderful example of how spoken word coupled with a theatre-style production can tell an impactful story.

Less than 30 minutes long, the depth that comes through as you listen to the project is profound. The light hearted energy in between the punchy poetic flows creates an intense juxtaposition that also gives listeners time to digest what is being expressed.

It leaves much open to interpretation in regards to how being a creative professional can somewhat be the best of both worlds. The rejections among the praises. The losses among the wins. Beneath the Cracks is to be listened to with an open mind to understand the subliminals within subliminals that make up the phenomenal wordplay this project has to offer.

The production is exciting and playful without losing its power when drawing upon meaningful topics such as racial inequality, class, genetics, and other discussion points that are relevant to the society we live in today, and the society of the past that led us here. Beneath the Cracks is authentic, raw, and honest. Liam has weaved his culture, intellect, and passion for the arts into this project from start to finish cementing his name as one of the most influential voices in UK modern spoken word.
